Jiu-Jitsu originates from the Japanese word Ju, which means ‘gentle,’ and Jutsu, which means ‘art.’ Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) is a martial art discipline that uses fighting techniques to throw an opponent to the ground and defend oneself against attacks. BJJ uses choke holds and joint locks to gain dominance over their opponents.

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu started as a self-defense mechanism. Now it is a combat sport with membership groups and competitions worldwide. BJJ focuses on using submission holds to immobilize your opponent, cut off their defense and get them on the ground. Submission is when your opponent is in a position where they cannot escape without being injured or choked, so they have to tap out. Submission is the checkmate of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.
