Jiujitsu is a ground-based combat sport that originated in Brazil. The sport aims to control one’s opponent by forcing them to the ground and dominating them until they submit. Most beginners believe that jiujitsu is all about submission. However, while it is vital to master submission moves, other basic techniques are needed to lay the foundation for success in the sport.

The first of these is the warm-up. Like any sport, an excellent warm-up technique is critical in achieving success and avoiding injuries. A good jiujitsu warm-up technique is cardio and stretch-based. Cardio warm-ups are essential for endurance, while stretches provide mobility and flexibility of the joints and muscles.

The second essential technique is the sweep. As a ground-based sport, it is crucial to perfect the art of forcing your opponent to the ground. Sweeping techniques like the pendulum and tricep sweep help knock the opponent off balance, creating an opening to lock in submission moves and assert dominance.
